Half the fun of being on holiday in Menorca is doing a bit of
travelling around and seeing the sights. But what are the best ways to
get around the island?
You can pretty much forget getting a bus. There is public transport, but buses aren’t regular enough to be useful, and perhaps aren’t the most relaxing way to travel on holiday! Taxis are popular and generally affordable on Menorca. To ensure you stay safe, follow some basic rules about travelling in someone else’s car.
Try not to travel alone and ensure you know exactly where you are going, so you can follow the route being taken. Keep a mobile phone with you. But don’t travel with lots of valuable gadgets on show. When you come to pay the driver don’t pull out a large bundle of notes. Keep a small amount of change separately in a pocket so they have no idea how much cash you’re carrying.
The best way of getting round the island is to hire a car. You can do this from the airport or in resort. But it’s a lot cheaper to do it before you leave, especially if you take advantage of the
reduced car hire rates available to Menorca Gold’s property owners and clients.
While driving around the island ensure you keep your hire documents, driving licence and passport (or photocopy of it) with you. This will make your life a lot easier if you are stopped by the police for any reason. In general, the driving laws are very similar to the UK. It’s compulsory to wear seatbelts, and you must not drink and drive at all. The Guardia are quick to breathalyse and treat offenders harshly.
There are a few small differences. For example, children aged under 12 must sit in the back of the car, and if your car breaks down or you have an accident, you must place a safety triangle 50 metres in front of and behind the car, plus wear a safety jacket. These are normally kept in the glove box of hire cars.
Be careful where you park. Look out for parking bays outlined by a blue box, and get a ticket from a nearby machine. Never park in front of a garage or driveway, or cause an obstruction, as you may find your rental car gets towed away!
All in, there’s not much to worry about while driving in Menorca. Use your common sense and stay safe, and driving will be an enjoyable part of your holiday.
