November 2007: Tasty food and drink to enjoy in Menorca

One of the best things about being on holiday is the wide range of affordable and delicious food and drink that's awaiting you.

And Menorca is the perfect destination for tasty treats. The island has many good restaurants, and the standard of food on offer is considered to be very high.

Unlike the food at home, you'll find the meat and fish have been sourced locally, and many fruit and vegetables are grown on the island.

As you can imagine there are many fish restaurants. You will easily find good paella and fish or shellfish soup.

One speciality of many of the island's restaurants is extravagant desserts. Keep an eye out for Menorquina ice cream. It was named after the island, although is now made in Barcelona.

And no Menorcan holiday is complete without a Trufito. This is surely every chocoholic's dream... it's a luxury chocolate ice cream bombe, which is then coated in chocolate. And just to top off its extravagance, it has a chocolate sauce core!

Looking at drinks, the island is famous for its junipers. So when the English fleet landed a few hundred years ago, it was natural for gin to be the result!

Menorcan gin is different to both English gin and the Mediterranean version. It is popular across the island where it is drunk neat, or mixed together with natural lemonade to be served as a drink called Pomada.

Wine is also widespread although very little is now made on the island. And of course you can get a bottle of St Miguel beer virtually anywhere.

Our holiday tip for instant relaxation? Find a good restaurant that can give you a Trufito and a glass of Menorcan Gin, kick back and enjoy the view.
