One of Menorca’s first beach resorts has announced it is going to have a significant half a million pound facelift over the winter. Cala En Porter, which is also known as Cala’n Porter, will see work start soon in the centre of the town.
The existing municipal building and offices will be knocked down. In their place some new offices will be built, including a residents’ association office, and an updated post office. There will also be a new children’s play area. The new building will also feature a large plaza designed as a place people can meet and talk. It will be well lit and have plenty of seats and gardens. The scheme will cost 693,000 Euros. That’s just under £500,000 at the current exchange rate.
It was announced by the Alaior town council earlier this month, and it’s hoped work will begin soon. Tenders have yet to be won, but the plan is to get construction finished in time for the start of the 2008 summer season. On top of this major change to the town’s infrastructure, there are also significant changes planned to the town’s medical services. At the moment a doctor only visits the town once a week. In the new plans, that will be doubled to two days a week. And in-between visits, more healthcare staff will be available to advise tourists and locals.
They will also be able to book appointments with the doctor. Cala En Porter is a town on the island’s south coast, and was one of the earliest developed beach resorts on the island. It has a beach cove with high imposing limestone cliffs. This makes it a unique and popular destination for holidaymakers. The eastern cliff is covered in villas and terrace bars, while the western cliff is currently undeveloped.
