December 2007 Christmas message

Have a safe Christmas holiday in Menorca   Christmas 2007 is set to be another great Christmas break for hundreds of holiday makers in Menorca. The island is popular with UK tourists all year round. But thanks to great weather, Christmas is a really great time to make a trip.  If you are going away with your family for a festive break to the island, use our guide to ensure you have a holiday to remember – not one to forget. The first thing to do is read the useful Menorca Gold guides, then get a more comprehensive guide book before you fly out.
Menorca is generally a safe island with little crime or problems. But any area you are unfamiliar with can put you in uncomfortable situations. A good guide book will prepare you in advance for local customs and particular problems to keep an eye out for.  Be careful not to wander the streets reading your book. You should try not to stand out as a tourist on the streets. And just as you would at home, try not to flash expensive technology such as cameras, or show how much cash you have on you.  At nights avoid badly lit streets, and be careful if you have had a few drinks. The combination of sun and a little alcohol can impair your judgement more than you would expect. That means you may not be as alert as normal to any approaching danger.  To get the most from your Menorcan holiday, why not learn one or two phrases. Most locals are bilingual in Spanish and a dialect of Catalan called Menorqui.  Even if you can only say please and thank you in Spanish, it shows respect to the islanders, and will help to encourage them to make your stay more pleasant
