Menorcas investing to welcome you to the island

Tourism is such an important part of the Menorcan economy that the island is investing £1.5 million into promoting it over the next year. The island council has recently taken over responsibility for promoting tourism. And it’s signed an agreement with the Baleric Institute of Tourism to invest two million Euros.
This is the latest in a series of moves by the island to ensure it stays a serious destination for visitors from other European countries, especially the UK.

We told you last week that there are new flights going to Menorca from Gatwick , and the island also recently announced it is officially extending the tourist season .

So what does the investment in tourism actually mean to you on your Menorcan holiday ? Well initially it’s planning 45 hours of activities including food tastings and cultural events, such as performances by Menorcan horses.

In a separate move, the Menorcan Hoteliers Association is actively trying to increase the number of flight connections between Menorca and Ireland. It’s been talking to Ryanair and Aer Lingus about what can be done to increase the number of Irish visitors. They’ve dropped off in recent years due to lack of promotion in the country.

Activity is likely to include a mix of extra flights being put on, together with a programme to increase awareness of Menorca and its culture in Ireland. This is more good news, on top of recent reports that the airport had a fantastic 2007 with 2.7 million passengers.
